Computer Setup and System Configuration • Be Careful with External Hard Drive Booting (within LINUX, etc)

I recently nearly lost all my DAW computer because of a glitch during an offline install of a Linux OS. I followed the protocol to the letter and nothing should've gone wrong, but somehow the installer deleted my boot loader from my internal (non-removeable) drive while I was installing to the external / alternative drive. I specifically was avoiding that problem, but it happened anyhow somehow.

I just wanted to let you guys know about this, whether you use Linux or not, it could happen.

I wasn't able to figure out how to get any LiveCD's or installers to reinstall or repair my boot loader on the internal NVMe drive. (Partially because GRUB2 doesn't know what an NVMe drive is even though the drive formatters and the OS'es do.)

I couldn't use GRUB for some odd reason, and other programs gave weird errors about "overlay"'s and sh** I can't comprehend.

Ultimately, I had to reinstall / erase the entire OS and internal drive.

Luckily, I had a backup of most, but not all of my stuff.
I didn't lose my tunes or my REAPER config, but I lost my Desktop Environment's customizations and configs and my custom icons and other niceties.

I also lost my web browser configs.

Most importantly, I lost my DAW's optimizations for audio; meaning, I have to do them all over again. But I did archive the instructions, so it won't be quite as difficult.

One severe pain in the arse though, is that I have to reinstall all my VST's and that took a few weeks last time. Now I have to do that all over again. Parts of it might be faster, but there's no guarantees.

I've got both Windows and Linux VST's working side by side, so I have to be careful to put each one in the correct place.

I'm not complaining, not asking for help; I just wanted you guys to know in case you ever seek to do similar.

So, be careful if you wanted to install a second OS to an external drive like I was doing. The installer might put stuff in the wrong place if it gets confused like GRUB's OS prober maybe did. I had no idea it could do that.

I will still be making music though.
And it's a chance for me to filter out some of the less fun VST's.
But I kinda already had done that during the 2 week install earlier this year. Sigh.

Peace.
Sincerely,
